Context MC

Clearly someone has been taking Chanelle’s Youtube tips to heart. No, not Rebecca Black. The latest soon-to-be star hailed from the site’s hall of fame is urban artist, Context MC, from… Norwich. Not exactly well known for its gritty environment, yet Context has pulled off the amazing feat of moving from Youtube to MTV after just posting two videos. To quote his own words, it’s definitely a case of “no small steps”.

Now airing on MTV Base ‘Off with their heads’ featuring Vertex of Marvell has a believable edge with lyrics that embrace Context’s hometown: “my background’s a mining town so you will never see me give up or start lying down”.

Featuring a wide range of ‘typical’ Norwich characters in the video, Ed Sheeran also appears in it (another talented young lad, now signed to Atlantic Records). Despite using a characteristically Grime beat, Context has been wary of putting himself in that category saying in an interview with the BBC “While my music shares a lot in common with grime, I often feel grime is more of a mind state and I don’t know that it is 100% me to be honest.”

Whatever genre you put his music in, big things are likely to be on the horizon for Context, so definitely watch this space.

Fashion and beauty

This spring, the first-year fashion students at the University of Westminster debuted their designs in a stunning runway show. I spoke to some of the designers a few days before the event and asked them what they think about when designing, and how they feel fashion adds to beauty.

Message in a tube

Youtube. Bringing families together. Who would have ever thought that something most of us use to catch the latest music videos, watch tv shows and laugh at, well let’s call them ‘special’ people (cough, cough, Eruchi), could actually help bring relief in a time of crisis.

Most of us have been glued to footage of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11th, whilst several others have been hoping to hear good news from family and friends that were in affected areas at the time. Japanese student, Akiko Kosaka, was one of those people, who studying in California at the time frantically searched for signs that her family were okay.

After days of looking, imagine her relief at hearing her family were alive and well and that this information could be confirmed on… Youtube. Scouring the site for hours, the hope ridden video eluded her until a friend sent her the link the next morning. In the video Akiko was able to see her sister holding up a card stating four words that left her on an emotional high:

“We are all safe.”

Akiko, elated at the revelation has since tried to send messages back through the media, and has done an interview with CNN. It’s a far cry from classic tales where messages were sent adrift in glass bottles, but it speaks volumes about the power of social media and ultimately in this case – Youtube.

You’re not English!

Midsomer Murders, famous for featuring Hollywood hitter, Orlando Bloom, before his time in the sun. Now it’s getting attention for the people that haven’t been seen in the show. In an interview with the Radio Times, Brian True-May, the producer of the show made the following comments:

We just don’t have ethnic minorities involved. Because it wouldn’t be the English village with them. It just wouldn’t work… Suddenly we might be in Slough. And if you went into Slough you wouldn’t see a white face there… We’re the last bastion of Englishness and I want to keep it that way”

There are so many things wrong with his statements that I don’t even know where to start. First of all why should Englishness be defined by a lack of ethnic minorities? There are plenty of people who consider themselves English, despite the fact that their parents or grandparents have come from countries far and exotic.

Secondly, you could argue that there aren’t many black faces in small English villages, but that doesn’t mean that there are none; and it definitely doesn’t mean that by depicting them, you take away from veracity of portraying an English village. I mean, how many real English villages do you know where so many people get gruesomely anyway?

Thirdly, yes, Slough is a heavily Asian area, but to say that ‘you wouldn’t see a white face there’ is absolutely ridiculous.

True-May was initially suspended for his comments, but is back now to see the show to the end of the series. So, just in case you’ve been dying to appear in an episode, here are some tips on how to be an Anglophile from an American friend.

Have a listen to this debate about it on Radio 4. What do you think, should someone with such archaic views be producing media content?

Kissiwah Knits

Hey,

Here’s one skill I bet you never thought I’d have… That’s right, I can knit, and today must be your lucky day, because I’m going to do my best to pass on that knowledge to you.

Don’t say I never do anything for you, lol

Campus Love

Looking at the papers recently, there seem to be several ladies that have been more than unlucky in love. The main suspect in the murder of Anni Dewani, is her newlywed husband, with whom she was on her honeymoon in South Africa. The ‘Night Stalker’ a man that is thought to have raped several elderly people over twenty years, is now accusing his ex-wife of framing him.

It just seems like us girls can’t catch a break. On the other side of the spectrum, Kate Middleton has finally found her Prince Charming and is set to marry him next month. So it got me thinking. There must be some trick to snaring the perfect guy, or at least one that isn’t a murderer.

Well, Kate got lucky at uni so, maybe there’s something in that.

Watching How to find your first college Boyfriend or Girlfriend, is a sure-fire way to get you on the right track, if you can get over the cheesy music and American accent. Listen out for the classic tip about starting conversations with people you don’t particularly fancy, also I would avoid guys like the one with the long hair and beard in the vid. Could end badly…

Here’s wishing you luck on your ventures.
